Members of the Southbury Garden Club share a passion for community involvement and are engaged in various community activities. We offer informative presentations and free advice from experienced gardeners.
Continuing Club Projects
Civic Awards
The Club recognizes up to four businesses, one in each category, for exceptional plantings and landscaping. The categories for the annual awards are Newcomer, Independent, Corporate, and Continuing Excellence. The Club thanks these businesses for contributing to the beautification of Southbury.
Healing Therapy and Senior Gardening
The purpose of Garden Therapy is to use plants and horticulture activities to enhance the physical, mental, and social health of elderly and incapacitated individuals in the community. Projects include floral workshops for residents at local senior living facilities and donations of essential items and gifts to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault staying at the Safe Haven shelter.
Youth Programs
The Southbury Public Library hosts Garden Club programs specifically designed for youth several times a year. These events are free, and registration is available on the library’s calendar of events.
Adult Programs
Informative programs on various plant and gardening topics are offered 7 times a year. The programs are free, open to the public, and held at the Southbury Public Library. Registration is not required.
Gardens
For Flowers: The Club maintains flower gardens at Ballantine Park, Ewald Park, Settlers Park, and The Southbury Town Hall. It also maintains the herb garden at Bent of the River Audubon.
For our Community: Food is grown at Heritage Village River Run gardens and donated to The Southbury Food Bank for distribution.
For the Planet: Pollinator Gardens featuring native plants have been installed and maintained at Settler’s Park and The Town Hall Green. Educational materials, including a native plant planting guide, are available on our website.
Flowers for the Library
Each week, one of the Club members provides a floral arrangement or flowering plant to display in the Southbury Public Library.
Holiday Wreaths
The Club donates decorated evergreen wreaths to the town of Southbury to decorate our public buildings.
Fairs and Festivals
The Club participates in Woodbury’s Earth Day Festival and Southbury’s Energy Fair & Green Expo. Both events focus on sustainability and align with our mission. Visit us and take part in a creative plant-themed activity.
350th Anniversary Quilt
The Club created a square that was included in the Town of Southbury’s 350th anniversary Quilt, which is on display in Town Hall.
