Design principles play an important part in the Southbury Garden Club’s goals. Three members are required to design arrangements for each monthly meeting. A certain theme or design, such as mass, line, underwater, driftwood, stretch and see-through designs have all been featured recently.

Workshops teaching design principles are held throughout the year. Club member Rita Mixer,
(pictured above left helping a member with an underwater design,) is an award winning floral designer who has won awards in numerous flower shows at the local, state and regional level.
She regularly holds free workshops for all levels of designers.. Each workshop features a different design style, ranging from basic mass and line designs to more advanced underwater, see through, and driftwood arrangements. She also explains the mechanics used to create successful projects.

Rita has earned numerous awards at the Federated Garden Clubs of CT Standard Flower Show at the Civic Center in Hartford.

All members are encouraged to participate in local, regional and even national flower shows.
